Amateur Radio Packet Mail from the International Space Station Alpha

This Amateur Radio packet email was received by Miles WF1F on October 8, 2002. The message was written by ISS Cosmonaut Commander Valery Korsun while he was in orbit on the International Space Station, and posted to Amateur Radio Personal Message System on ISS for everyone to Read.

Background:
Every 2 to 3 weeks, Commander Valery Krozun, posts a status message to the PMS Message system for everyone to read.  In message number 3, the commander talks about the arrival of Space Shuttle STS-112.

In message number 1, the commander talks about a new amateur radio experiment.  The temporary frequency change will allow Amateur Radio users to attempt to relay signals between two different amateur radio satellites.  The existing Amateur Radio experiment on ISS has a mode we call Round-Table or Unproto.  This mode allows stations on Earth to send short packet messages to the packet station on ISS and that packet will be repeated by the Personal Message System on ISS back to Earth.  The typical range of Round Table message via ISS is over 1000 miles.  If another amateur radio satellite called PCSAT hears the messages being repeated by the ISS PMS, then PCSAT will repeat that message for an additional range of over 1000 miles.
