Packet Mail from the International Space Station Alpha
Amateur Radio Packet Mail from the International Space Station Alpha
This Amateur Radio packet email was received by Miles WF1F on September 28, 2002. The
message was written by ISS Cosmonaut Commander Valery Korsun while he was in orbit on the
International Space Station.
Background:
About once a week, I will send Valery a sort message about life on Earth.
Most of the information is just simple stories and status information
about the new ARISS amateur radio projects.
I avoid any controversial topics or email that requires the crew to send a response.

Subject: Orbits
Dear Commander:
The orbits of ISS have changed and I have not been on the air very much.
The orbits of ISS are now getting better. ISS passes over Boston just
before my sleep time.
This weekend we are going to a County Fair.
The children love the see the farm animals and play games at the Fair.
73 have a nice weekend Miles

Subject: back up for Lance Bass
Dear: Valery and crew.
We had our monthly telecon with ARISS today.
We discussed many topics, including plans to
try to educate the world about which channels
are being used by ISS.
We think that most of the voices you hear while
over Spain and China are Illegal Taxis and other non-ham stations
using the Amateur Radio band.
It looks like Lance bass will fly Next year some day.
I talked to S. S. and I suggested that RSA should
train me to be the backup crew for Lance Bass.
Fall:
The fall season is here. The weather in Boston has
been great all summer. It is still very warm and we
had a good supply of rain. I like the cool nights.
I am planing a few short-flying trips soon.
I need to keep up my flying time.
73 Miles

Subject: GREETINGS FOR BACKUP...
MILES, GOOD TO HEAR YOU.
I HOPE [the] BAD PASS[es] WILL FINISH SOON AND YOU WILL GET UP DURING MY CALL.
[Valery is referring to the orbit position of ISS. Bad Pass, means
that ISS was passing over Boston, while both of us were sleeping and
we have not been able to talk to each other for 2 weeks. The orbit
pattern of ISS repeats every 8 weeks. So for 2-3 weeks voice links
with ISS can not talk place because ISS will be flying over the USA while the
crew is sleeping.]
HAVE A GOOD FLIGHTS.
73. VALERY
